Semple & McKillop were appointed by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust (SHSCT) to review the existing heating arrangements and undertake an energy feasibility study. The agreed optimum solution was to decentralise the existing three heavy oil fired boilers which provided medium pressure hot water to 11 plantrooms. These were replaced with natural gas-fired condensing boilers and water heaters installed at a number of strategic locations across the site.
The new boilers are fully controlled and monitored by a site networked Building Energy Management System. Based on recorded energy information to date, the St Luke’s Hospital site will exceed its target for a 40% reduction in annual running costs and a 45% reduction in carbon omissions. The project will have an approximate payback period of 2.5 years.
As an award wining project, it has been commended as ‘... a good innovation in a modular approach and very replicable’.
This fast track four month programme was completed with minimal disruption to services, staff and patients.
The project received the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) ‘Leading Energy Efficiency Project Award 2009’.
