Transformation of former Regional War Rooms
On 19th August, we attended the official opening of the former Regional War Room, which has been repurposed as an archive store for Historic Environment Records of Northern Ireland (HERoNI). The facility was officially opened by Minister Gordon Lyons MLA.
Our team provided planning, design, coordination, inspection, commissioning, and handover of the building services, creating the specialist environmental conditions protect valuable archive collections, while preserving the building’s historic fabric and character.
M&E Services for this re-used Grade B1 Listed Cold War bunker included ventilation, air conditioning, dehumidification and environmental monitoring, alongside new electrical installations, energy-efficient lighting, fire detection, and security systems.
Significant original services were also retained and conserved, including the original air handling unit, ductwork, generator, and switchgear.
The completed project provides HERoNI with a secure, carefully controlled environment for the long-term protection of Northern Ireland’s historic records, while giving the former Regional War Rooms a sustainable new purpose.
